The Pathology Partnership is a joint venture between six NHS trusts in the East of England.
The organisation was established in May 2014.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust are the two hubs for pathology in the region. East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust and West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust retain host satellite laboratories which will carry out only urgent work. The trusts are both owners and customers under the joint venture arrangement.
In April 2015 it emerged that it was forecasting a £4.5m deficit for 2014-15 on budgeted income of £67.8m. The partnership’s commercial director, Andrew Knott said "During our first year we have been concentrating on establishing our western hub at Cambridge and have already moved GP activity previously carried out at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and East and North Herts Trust to this hub laboratory.” Work has now begun on the eastern hub at Ipswich Hospital Trust and “rolling out a single laboratory information system and standardising equipment and processes.
Cambridge University Hospitals, which employs the partnership’s 800 staff, withdrew in July 2016 after it incurred a £15 million deficit in 2015-16.
