The Parliament of Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaanni Inatsisartut; Danish: Grønlands Landsting, lit. 'Country-Thing of Greenland') is the legislative branch of the government of Greenland, an autonomous country of Denmark. There are 31 members; 16 are needed for a majority. They are elected for four-year periods.
The Parliament of Greenland succeeded the Provincial Council (Danish: Grønlands Landsråd) on 1 May 1979. The Parliament is led by a Presidency comprising four members of the Parliament and the Chairman. There are 31 members in the Assembly.
The speaker is the presiding officer of the Inatsisartut. The speaker determines which members may speak, and is responsible for maintaining order. The current speaker is Lars Emil Johansen, former leader of the Forward Party. The Speaker is nominated by the Prime Minister immediately following a general election and is confirmed by members; the Speaker appoints four deputies.
After the election, the social-democratic Siumut has decided to form a coalition government with two center-right parties, the Democrats and Atassut. On 27 October 2016, Siumut has pursued a different coalition government formation with both the Inuit Ataqatigiit and Partii Naleraq, leaving its two former coalition parties in the Opposition. In terms of numbers, this is the largest coalition in the recent history of the Greenlandic Parliament.
