Pants on Fire (horse)

Pants On Fire (foaled on March 20, 2008) is a retired racehorse whose biggest victory was in the Louisiana Derby. He won a stakes race in five of his six years of racing.

Foaled March 20, 2008, Pants On Fire is by Jump Start (sire of millionaires Prayer for Relief and Rail Trip), and out of the Cape Town mare Cabo de Noche. He was bred in Kentucky by K & G Stables, and owned by George and Lori Hall. He was named for his father's "below the belt passions". Kelly Breen trained him throughout his career.

Pants On Fire ran four times as a juvenile, in three maiden special weights and one allowance. He ran second in his first start, fourth in his second, won his third, and ran third in the fourth.

As a three-year-old, Pants On Fire ran third in the Count Fleet Stakes in his sophomore debut. He then finished second in the Lecomte Stakes and a sixth in the Risen Star Stakes, before securing his first Grade I in the Louisiana Derby, ridden by Rosie Napravnik. He finished 9th in the 2011 Kentucky Derby. He followed his disappointing run in the Derby with a win in the Gr.III Pegasus Stakes. He closed out his sophomore season with a fifth in the Gr.I Haskell Invitational.

The now four-year-old began his 2012 season with a win in an allowance race. From there, he ran in four stakes races. He finished fifth in the Gr.II New Orleans Handicap and sixth in the Gr.II Charles Town Classic, then won the ungraded Skip Away Stakes. He ended his season with a sixth in the ungraded Delta Mile.

Pants On Fire opened his five-year-old season with a third place finish in the Gr.III Hal's Hope Stakes, and a win in an allowance race. He then ran third in the Skip Away Stakes (now a Gr.III), and ran the same in the Mountainview Handicap. He won his next two races- the Gr.III Ack Ack Handicap and the Gr.II Monmouth Cup Stakes. He finished a disappointing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Pants On Fire then made the trip to Japan, to run in the Gr.I Japan Dirt Cup at Hanshin, only to run sixteenth.

After returning from Japan, Pants On Fire took an 8 month layoff from racing. He returned to racing in the Monmouth Cup in 2014 to defend his title, but ran third to Valid and winner Bradester. He followed this run with a third in the Philip H. Iselin Breeders' Cup Handicap and a second place finish in the Left Bank Stakes. He returned to the winner's circle in the Wild and Wonderful Stakes at Charles Town. He returned to the Breeders' Cup to run in the Dirt Mile, and ran third- a huge improvement from his sixth place finish the year before, despite being far behind Tapiture and winner Goldencents, who both battled gamely. He closed out his 2014 year with a third place finish in the Harlan's Holiday Stakes.
