Pacific Rim: Uprising is an upcoming American science fiction monster film directed by Steven S. DeKnight and written by DeKnight, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin from a story by Guillermo del Toro. It is a sequel to Legendary Pictures 2013 film Pacific Rim. The film stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny and Jing Tian, with Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman returning in their roles from the original film. It is scheduled to be released on February 23, 2018, by Universal Pictures.
In 2012. prior to the first movies release, Del Torro noted that he had ideas for the sequel., later in 2014 noting that he had he had secretly been working on the script with Zak Penn for several months. Later in June , del Toro confirmed that he would direct the sequel, and that it would be released by Universal Pictures, Legendary's new financing and distribution partner, on April 7, 2017. By September 2015 however the sequel's future looked unclear as Universal indefinatly delayed the film. later that month replacing the movie's release with Pitch Perfect 3.
In February 2016, the studio and del Toro himself via Twitter announced that Steven S. DeKnight would take over directing duties with a new script written by Jon Spaihts marking DeKnight's feature directorial debut, while del Toro would remain on the project as a producer.Derek Connolly was brought in on May 12, 2016, to do another rewrite of the script. On June 6, John Boyega was cast in the sequel to play the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the first film. On June 30, 2016, it was reported that Scott Eastwood was in early talks to join the film.Charlie Hunnam would not be returning for the sequel because of his scheduling conflicts with other projects. On September 15, 2016, newcomer Cailee Spaeny was cast in the film for the female lead role, with Jing Tian also joined the cast a few days later. On September 22, 2016, Levi Meaden was cast in the film, and following him Adria Arjona also joined the film. On September 29, 2016, DeKnight announced on his twitter that cinematographer, Dan Mindel, will be working on the film. On October 18, 2016, Karan Brar was cast in the film. In November 2016, Rahart Adams was cast in the film. On November 21, Chinese actor Zhang Jin was cast in the film, along with Shyrley Rodriguez, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying, Qian Yongchen, and cameos by Xiao Yang and Kim Jeong-hoon.
