Oxford City Police was the police force responsible for policing the City of Oxford, England. It came into operation on 1 January 1869 as a result of the Oxford Police Act of 1868. It was responsible for the policing of the city for 99 years and three months.
Charles Head was the first Chief Officer of Oxford City Police. He previously served as an Inspector with the Metropolitan Police moving to Oxford in 1869, together with 6 constables from the Met to form the basis of the Oxford City force. He was appointed Superintendent and served as the forces Chief Officer for 28 years retiring 12 March 1897.
On 1 April 1968 the force amalgamated with Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire County Constabularies and Reading Borough Police to become part of the Thames Valley Constabulary, which was later renamed Thames Valley Police which is responsible for policing Oxford to this day.
The fictional television drama, Endeavour, portrays Detective Constable Endeavour Morse as he investigates crime in Oxford as part of the City police. This series is a prequel to Inspector Morse in which the much older character Detective Chief Inspector Morse investigates crime in and around Oxford with Thames Valley Police, mirroring the changes in real life to the city's police force.
