Owen West is a United States Marine, banker, and author. He is President Donald Trump's nominee to become Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict & Interdependent Capabilities. He is the son of Bing West, a former Marine Colonel and Vietnam veteran who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs during Ronald Reagan's presidency.
West attended Harvard University on an ROTC scholarship. After graduating, he served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps for six years. After leaving active duty, West earned an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He then went to work for Goldman Sachs in New York City. After the September 11 attacks he rejoined the U.S. Marine Corps, joining the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company as a platoon leader and later as a combat advisor. In between deployments, West served as an embedded reporter with Marines outside Fallujah. West was twice deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
At Goldman Sachs, West served as a partner, head of global natural gas trading, and co-head of global power trading. He has also been the director of the Positive Coaching Alliance, a director of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
