Norwegian Language Council

The Language Council of Norway (Norwegian: Språkrådet) is the consultative body for the Norwegian state on language issues. It replaced the Norwegian Language Council (Norwegian: Norsk språkråd) which was operative from 1974 to 2005. Norway's language council has about thirty-five employees. It is a subsidiary agency of the Ministry of Culture.

The Norwegian Language council (1974–2005) had 38 members, and created lists of acceptable word forms. Some words have two forms, the official form which must be used in government documents and textbooks, and optional forms, which can be used by students in state schools.

Marius Sandvei, known for his long-term editing of the Norwegian normative dictionary Tanums store rettskrivningsordbok, was a member from its foundation in 1952 to 1959.
