The Northwestern State Demons basketball team is the basketball team that represents Northwestern State University in , Louisiana, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Southland Conference.
McConathy was hired in 1999. In his first season the team went 17–13 finishing fourth in the Southland Conference. In 2001 McConathy lead the Demons to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance. Specifically, The Demons won the first play in game after the NCAA expanded the men's tournament from 64 to 65 teams. The Demons defeated Winthrop 71–67 in that game, and then lost to Illinois 96–54 in the next round. In 2004 the team went 21–12 and finished first in the Southland Conference but failed to win the conference tournament. The very next year in 2005 the Demons went 26–8 and won the Southland regular season and Conference championships giving Northwestern State their second appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Demons would get one of the biggest upsets in the tournament by beating the Iowa Hawkeyes 64–63 in the First Round. The Demons would then go on to lose to the West Virginia Mountaineers 67–54 in the Second Round. In 2006 the Demons went 17–15 finishing first in the East division of The Southland Conference. After some average seasons the Demons broke out in the 2012–13 season when they went 23–9 and won the Southland Conference tournament to get their third appearance in the NCAA tournament. The team would lose to the Florida Gators 79–47 in the Second Round.
