Northern Army (Russia)

The Northern Army was a White army that operated in the Northern Front of the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1920.

After the October Revolution, numerous counter-revolutionary governments formed to fight against the Bolsheviks. In August 1918, a leftist regime called the Supreme Administration of the Northern Region was formed in Arkhangelsk, led by the veteran Populist Nikolai Tchaikovsky. It was toppled by the military on 6 September 1918, and Tchaikovsky was incarcerated in the island monastery of Solovetsky. Later, on 28 September 1918, Tchaikovsky was freed and permitted to establish a new government, the Provisional Government of the Northern Region. In January 1919, Tchaikovsky was replaced by Yevgeny Miller. After the Allies withdrew, the Whites quickly collapsed. The remnants of the army were evacuated from Arkhangelsk in February 1920.
