Nipmuc Regional High School is located on a fifty-acre wooded lot in Upton, Massachusetts, in the Blackstone Valley region of the state. It serves the towns of Mendon and Upton through a cooperative arrangement established in 1961. In addition to Nipmuc Regional, there are three other schools in the Mendon-Upton Regional School District: Miscoe Hill Middle School, Clough Elementary School (Mendon,) and Memorial Elementary School (Upton.) The year-round population of the two towns is respectively 5,876 and 7,640.
Mendon is historically a rural, agrarian community. Established in 1667, it is the second oldest town in Worcester County. Upton's beginnings are different from most towns in the Commonwealth. Instead of being taken from one town or from common ground, it was put together in 1735 from the outlying areas of four towns: Sutton, Hopkinton, Mendon, and Uxbridge.
Mendon and Upton are small, friendly communities that are primarily residential in nature. During the past ten years, the towns have been diversified by their proximity to Boston as well as Providence, Rhode Island, and the technological industry located along nearby Route 495. Much of the local population now consists of people working in the Boston, Worcester, Framingham, Natick, and Providence areas. They are attractive towns to reside in not only because of their easy access to major cities, but also because of their quiet, rural environment.
The average household income in 2012 in Mendon was $92,913 and in Upton was $102,615. The unemployment rate in both communities is approximately 5.4%, 1.7% below the state average. Less than 5% of district families currently live below the low-income level established by the Federal Free Lunch Program.
