João Nicolau de Melo Breyner Moreira Lopes (30 July 1940 – 14 March 2016) was a Portuguese playwright, director and actor. He performed in more than eighty films, beginning in 1964.
Son of Nicolau Moreira Lopes (1915–1965) and Augusta Pereira da Silva de Melo Breyner Pereira (1920 – 23 May 2003), he was a cousin of the Portuguese author Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
After his childhood in Serpa, he moved with his parents to Lisbon. There he studied in the Liceu Camões. He gained diplomas from the Conservatório Nacional, first in song and then in drama.
His first wife was Mafalda Maria de Alpoim Vieira Barbosa. His second marriage was to the Portuguese actress Sofia Sá da Bandeira, between 1996 and 2001. He had two daughters, Mariana and Constança Fidalgo Ramos de Melo Breyner Lopes, from a previous relationship with Cláudia Fidalgo. His third wife was Mafalda Gomes de Amorim Bessa.
He died in Lisbon of cardiac arrest, aged 75.
