Niccolo Milanese

Niccolo Milanese (b.1984 London, UK) is a writer and founding director of European Alternatives.

Born to an Italian father and British mother in London, he studied philosophy at Cambridge, Siena and Paris. Now he lives in Paris with his wife and children. Whilst still at Cambridge he was involved in setting up The Liberal Magazine with Benjamin Ramm. After graduating he worked as a freelance writer and poet.

Milanese established European Alternatives with Lorenzo Marsili in 2006, and together they organised the first London Festival of Europe in 2007, which would later become Transeuropa Festival. Since 2007, European Alternatives has developed a network throughout Europe and become one of the main organisations initiating and networking campaigns for a more democratic, equal and culturally open adventurous Europe, advancing and defending citizenship rights. He has called for better treatment for the Roma, the creation of Eurobonds, a humane European migration policy, and has written and spoken extensively on the democratisation of Europe, advancing of citizen rights and protection of free movement.

For this activity, Milanese has collected prizes on behalf of European Alternatives from the European Parliament and European Economic and Social Committee.

Milanese was singled out by the Daily Mail in 2014, criticising European Alternatives for creating a 'Marxist Manifesto for a European Superstate'. Milanese responded to the accusations by calling them a reflection of the cowardly nature of democratic discussion over European affairs.

Milanese was also active following the Arab spring in promoting connection, exchange and learning between activists in North Africa and in Europe through numerous initiatives, including Cultural Innovators Network and YAANI.

Milanese is one of the hosts of the political online show TalkReal. He has written in the Guardian newspaper, the Independent, Euractive, in SME Slovakia, Pravda Slovakia. Notable profiles and interviews with Milanese have been made by SME (Slovak), by Tovima (Greek) and by WZB (English).
