The reserve / under-23 team plays in the Premier League 2 Division 2. It also participates in the Northumberland Senior Cup each season. Newcastle Reserves play their home games at Whitley Park, the home ground of West Allotment Celtic, and also at the first team stadium St James' Park. Young players are often sent on loan to other clubs to aid their development. The Newcastle United Under-23 players out on loan are:
The academy team plays in the Barclays U18 Premier League and is only for players 18 and below. Home games are played at the academy base at Little Benton, located to the immediate south of Newcastle United's training ground, Darsley Park.
As an ambitious club with aspirations of European football, the objective of Newcastle's Academy is to develop players and their football-playing abilities to their fullest potential, so that these players might someday contribute to Newcastle's success on the pitch. This is made possible by guaranteeing the best training, education and management to the region’s most promising players. Newcastle is among those teams that run an Academy for their youth players without actually having their own youth training facility. This means that the youth teams practice at different locations, in facilities rented from universities or from the city. However, they are in the process of building their own purpose-built Academy.
