Democratic
Elections for members of the New York City Council are being held in 2013. Primary elections were held on September 10, 2013, for all 51 districts of the city council. Many incumbents are termed out of office, while others were defeated in the primary, resulting in the largest turnover of council members since 2001, when 36 new members were nominated and elected to office in the council. Those who won their primaries without another contending party in the same district are considered the effective winner of the seat outright.
In the following seats, there was no contested race in the Democratic primary on September 10, as only a single candidate had filed by the deadline. All of the following Democratic candidates either advanced directly to the ballot on November 5, or were declared directly elected to council (see #Acclaimed below) as they faced no Republican challenger:
The Republican Party only had one contested primary, in the District 50 race. All of the following Republican candidates were the only declared candidates for their races, and thus advanced directly to the ballot on November 5:
In addition, there were no declared Republican candidates at all in Districts 1, 2, 7, 9, 10, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42 or 45.
In the following districts, the candidates noted below ran uncontested, and were thus directly elected to the new council:
