"New Rules" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa from her eponymous debut studio album (2017). The song was written by Caroline Ailin, Emily Warren and Ian Kirkpatrick, and produced by the latter. It was released to contemporary hit radio in the United Kingdom on 15 July 2017 as the album's seventh single. The song's music video was released on 7 July.
When asked about what the song meant, Lipa said "I wish I had 'New Rules' when I was breaking up with someone. I think it's something everyone can relate to."
"New Rules" comprises pattering drums leading into the chorus, which is interspersed by elements of bashment, tropical house and pop. Lyrically, the singer makes a cautionary list, with lines such as "if you're under him, you're not over him."
Writing for Clash, Alex Green felt tracks like "New Rules" demonstrate "exactly why critics picked Lipa out as one to watch [the previous year]."PopCrush's Bradley Stern called it "an obvious standout and fan favorite." Dayna Evans of The Cut labeled it a "breakup anthem."DIY's Alim Kheraj stated that the song "is a flat tropically-tinged empowerment track that already sounds dated."
The music video for "New Rules", directed by Henry Scholfield, premiered on 7 July 2017. Ryan Reed of Rolling Stone described the music video: "Henry Scholfield, who previously helmed the British vocalist's 'Lost in Your Light' clip, follows Lipa throughout Miami's Confidante Hotel, as she toils with the idea of giving her ex a second chance. Several women appear bedside, giving her the confidence to start fresh—and avoid answering his phone call. The friends drift from her hotel room to the hallway, where they perform some choreographed moves. They wind up at the pool, where the now-poised Lipa struts across the water's surface."
