New Panvel is a node in the Panvel city of Maharashtra state in Konkan division. New Panvel is developed on marshy land and previously Mango cultivated area. New Panvel is residential as well as commercial and educational node in the city of Navi Mumbai. New Panvel is divided into two parts: New Panvel (E), on the eastern side of Diva-Panvel-Roha central railway and New Panvel (W) on the western side of it. New Panvel West and New Panvel East are joined by New Panvel East-West flyover bridge also known as Khanda Colony Flyover. New Panvel West is also popularly called Khanda Colony by the local villagers, as the city is adjacent to two small villages Dhakta Khanda and Motha Khanda (Greater Khanda).
Khanda and Khandeshwar Railway stations derive their names from an very old Shiva Temple known as Khandeshwar Mahadev along the sides of a beautiful scenic lake of Khandeshwar. Khandeshwar lake hosts the mahashivratri mela every year and the event is gaining mass popularity among the nearby cities year after year. Takka Naka is a new node of New Panvel being developed by CIDCO. Presently, Takka Naka is covered by dense mango trees which may be cut down for the development. Major commercial activities are present in sectors 15 to 19 of East just outside the railway station. K Mall is a shopping center in New Panvel's Takka Naka node while Orion Mall along the Mumbai-Pune old highway next to the Panvel Bus depot is emerging as the most popular shopping destination in town.
The planned Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to affect real estate prices in the surrounding area of New Panvel which are under development. Sector 17 of New Panvel West bound by JNPT bypass and NH-4 alongside Motha Khanda is located near the railway station. Many residential buildings in the New Panvel West namely Sai Prasad CHS., A Type CIDCO settlements offer budget housing for lower income groups.
Most part of New Panvel west was planned and developed hence appear organised. New Panvel East is in the process of organised development. New Panvel East boasts of some good country side view of hills of matheran and the waterfalls on them during monsoon is worth a watch. New Panvel East also has a river locally known as river 'Kalundre' situated on the banks of Panvel Creek. Kauva Galli is a road near Khandeshwar temple known for its enormous crow population, large amount of crows & cranes use this place for breeding as it is near the water source of Khandeshwar lake.
