National Skill Development Corporation India (NSDC) is a not-for-profit company set up to address the need for providing skilled manpower across various industry sectors. Its formation was announced in the 2008 budget by then Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee. NSDC is currently headed by Shree Manish Kumar.
National Skill Development Corporation has been formed to meet certain objectives, which are:
Developing frameworks and curriculum to upgrade skills comply with the international quality standards.
Ensuring operational and financial involvement from the industry and supporting the private sector of the country in their skill development initiatives by proposing effective Public-Private Partnerships.
Identifying sectors that lack of effective market mechanisms and facilitating finances to fuel the growth of those sectors.
To support plans & schemes that can play the role of a catalysis to help grow the skill marketplace in the country.
The National Skill Development Corporation India (NSDC) was setup as a, Public Private Partnership Company and operates by (a) enabling the formation of vocational training institutions, (b) providing "long term" capital and (c) fostering skills development with adequate support systems.
In the light of the recent GST regulations, the NSDC and the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) collaborated to train over one lakh people as GST experts to help the corporate sector with accounts work. The achievements of NDSC include training in excess of 5.2 million students, forging 235 private sector partnerships and introducing 38 Sector Skill Councils (SSC) in various industry verticals and informal sectors.
It is estimated that by 2022 India will need 104 million freshly trained people in the workforce with a further 298 million requiring upgrade in training.To address this NSDC has also freshly started skill development initiatives in North East India with a target of training 2.4 lakh people in 2017-18. NSDC also partnered with Amazon’s “meri saheli” initiative to improve digital literacy of women.NSDC has also tied up with Google India to launch an Android Skill Development program to train people on mobile development via a 100-hour course to be delivered though partner agencies .
Mr. Kumar, the CEO and MD of NSDC also signed a collaboration with Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs to train people on CSR, Corporate Governance, Business Innovation, E-governance etc. Another recent partnership of NSDC was with the Adani Foundation to train 300,000 people by 2022. NSDC has also tied up Uber and Maruti to create a million livelihoods by 2018 by imparting driver training and help with vehicle financing.
