The National Firearms Museum is a museum owned and operated by the National Rifle Association that is focused on the evolution of firearms and the history of firearms in America. It is co-located at the NRA's headquarters at 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, Virginia and showcases more than 3,000 guns in a 15,000 square foot space. The facility opened in May 1998.
Jim Supica, the museum's director since 2007, has stated his desire would be for the museum to be in nearby Washington, D.C. among more popular museums, but, "gun laws would make it very difficult in the District for people to bring us loans or donations." Regarding concerns about the NRA's political agenda mixing with the museum's mission, Supica says funding comes from the NRA Foundation, an education branch which is separate from the NRA.
