National Ballet of Portugal - CNB


National Ballet of Portugal (Portuguese: Companhia Nacional de Bailado – CNB) was founded in 1977 to present full versions of ballets to the Portuguese public.

The company was created under a legal dispatch signed by The Secretary of State of Culture, David Mourão-Ferreira, on behalf of The Portuguese Government. CNB was responsible to present, for the first time to the Portuguese public full versions of ballets such as La Sylphide, Raymonda, Swan Lake, Coppélia, Don Quixote and Romeo and Juliet.

It also revived classics like Pas de Quatre, Giselle, Les Sylphides, Petruchka, La Bayadère, Firebird, The Nutcracker, The Rite of Spring, Les Noces and La Fille Mal Gardé among others, as well as choreographies signed by renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Serge Lifar, David Lichine, Kurt Joos, José Limón, Rudi van Dantzig, Vicente Nebrada, Lar Lubovitch, Michael Corder, William Forsythe, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Hans van Manen, Robert North, Heinz Spöerli, Nacho Duato, Mauro Bigonzetti or Edward Clug.

Portuguese choreographers including Armando Jorge, Fernando Lima, Carlos Trincheiras, Olga Roriz, Vasco Wellenkamp, Rui Lopes Graça, Paulo Ribeiro, Clara Andermatt, Fernando Duarte and Rui Horta have been invited to create specially for CNB dancers.

Since 2002, Teatro Camões has been CNB principal venue and its head office building is in Rua Vítor Cordon, in Chiado. The main patron is Fundação EDP.
