Nardole is a fictional character created by Steven Moffat and portrayed by Matt Lucas in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. First appearing in the 2015 Christmas special "The Husbands of River Song", Nardole serves as a companion of the twelfth incarnation of the alien time traveller known as the Doctor (portrayed by Peter Capaldi).
Nardole is introduced in the 2015 Christmas special "The Husbands of River Song". He was hired by Professor River Song as a servant on Mendorax Dellora on Christmas Day 5343. He unwittingly brought the Doctor and River back together, mistaking the Doctor for a surgeon River had requested to extract a diamond from the head of the ruthless King Hydroflax. During the episode Nardole had his head cut off, but he managed to survive because it was uploaded to King Hydroflax' cyborg body.
In the 2016 Christmas special "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" Nardole appeared as the Doctor's companion. Once his final night with River Song had concluded, the Doctor was somehow able to reattach Nardole's head to his body, Nardole joining the Doctor as a companion so that the grieving Time Lord would have someone to stop him going too far over his grief at his final parting with River.
In November 2015, it was announced that Matt Lucas would appear in "The Husbands of River Song" as a guest character named Nardole. On 14 June 2016 it was confirmed that Nardole would return in the 2016 Christmas special as the Doctor's companion and stay in this role in the tenth series.Steven Moffat said that Matt Lucas wanted to play Nardole again and so he used the chance to bring Lucas back as a regular. Nardole is the first full-time alien companion in the revived series; the last one was Vislor Turlough, who served as a companion of the Fifth Doctor.
