Dr. Namvar Singh is a progressive literary critic, linguist, academician and theoretician.In the literary tradition of Rabindranath Tagore he has been a student of Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi.
Dr. Namvar Singh was born on 1 May, 1927 in village Jiyanpur in Varanasi (now comes under Chandauli) Dstrict of Uttar Pradesh, India. He got his early education at his native village. However he moved to Varanasi to pursue his further studies. He did his matriculation and higher secondary from Udai Pratap Autonomous College, Varanasi. He got enrolled in Banaras Hindu Unversity (BHU) for higher studies. From Banaras Hindu University he completed his Masters with gold medal and got the Ph.D. under the supervision of Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi.Writer Kashinath Singh is younger brother of Dr. Namvar Singh.
After completing his Ph.D. Namvar Singh started teaching at Banaras Hindu University. However after a controversy he left BHU. For a brief period he also taught at Sagar University and Jodhpur University. But it was Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) where he created a new pattern of teaching and preparing of curriculum .He retired from JNU in the year 1992. He is still a 'professor emeritus' at the Center of Indian Languages at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Apart from his academic engagement Dr. Namvar Singh worked as the Editor of 'Janyuga' (weekly news magazine) and 'Alochana' (Hindi magazine for literary criticism). After retirement from JNU Namvar Singh was appointed as Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha.He has also worked as the Chairman of Raja Ramnohun Roy Library Foundation.Till date Namvar Singh has written more than a dozen of books.Dr. Namvar Singh is currently chairman of selection board of prestigious 'Jnanpith Award'.
