Naanal (தமிழ்: நாணல், English: Tall Grass or Reed) is a 1964 black-and-white Tamil family drama film directed by K. Balachandar and produced by G. N. Saravanan. The script was written by K. Balachandar and music by V. Kumar. It stars R. Muthuraman, Major Sundararajan, Sreekanth, Sowcar Janaki, K. R. Vijaya and Nagesh. When Crazy Mohan wrote his first play for S. V. Sekhar's troupe, he was inspired by Naanal to create Crazy Thieves in Palavakkam.
The story is about four jailbirds escaping the prison to take revenge on the judge who sentenced them. They take over his house, and the movie builds around the judge and his family escaping from them. Although the movie has a supporting cast that shines throughout (Sowcar Janaki, Sreekanth, K. R. Vijaya, R. Muthuraman and of course Nagesh), it is brilliant because of Sudararajan (who plays the leader of the rat pack) and V. S. Raghavan (who plays the Judge).
Music composed by V. Kumar and lyrics were written by Alangudi Somu and Suratha. The playback singers consists of T. M. Soundararajan, P. Suseela and Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi.
