Murdoc Niccals is a fictional English bassist for the British virtual band Gorillaz. He is voiced by Phil Cornwell and was created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.
Hewlett said that the character Murdoc is responsible for the majority of the creating of Gorillaz and that he is always angry that he is not the frontman of the band, though he is commonly seen as the band's leader. Hewlett has stated that aspects of Murdoc's appearance and personality were based on that of a young Keith Richards. In 2008, during Phase 2, Niccals burnt down the band's home "Kong Studios", blamed it on some random teenagers, got money, and went on to go find a new home for him and the band members that was safe and private. He then proceeded to put cameras all around the place and told everyone what the coordinates were. After a long time of sailing in a boat, Niccals finally found a new location, Plastic Beach (also the name of their third studio album). He gave it the nickname Plastic Beach because it was full of trash and plastic. He thought it would be nice to paint it a nice Salmon Pink to give it a 'nicer look' and built a 'playboy mansion' on top of it. This is where the remaining members of the band (Mainly Murdoc, 2D, the singer, and a Cyborg version of their guitarist Noodle), would record their third album.
