Mukhyamantri Chandru (Kannada: ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಚಂದ್ರು) (born 28 August 1953) is a Kannada movie actor and politician who resides in Bangalore, Karnataka. He is a versatile actor, easily fitting into comedy roles or playing more serious parts as a villain. He has acted in more than 300 films and is one of the finest supporting actors in the Kannada Film Industry. Mukhya Mantri was a popular Kannada drama in which he played the lead role, during the 1970s and 1980s, which resulted in getting the prefix to his original name. He is President of Kannada Abhivriddhi Pradhikara, a Government Authority which looks after implementation of Kannada language in Karnataka and as a President, he holds the rank equivalent to a Cabinet Minister of Government of Karnataka.
One of his more memorable roles is his role as the overbearing landlord in the comedy Ganeshana Maduve, where he has acted with Anant Nag. Mukhyamantri Chandru is the only man with the title Mukhyamantri, which translates to "chief minister". Mukhya Mantri was a piece of work which was presented by the popular Kannada troupe, Kalagangotri. The drama which brought Chandru the recognition he deserved is staged even to this day as Chandru played an active Mukhya Mantri's (Chief minister's) role in the play. His Film career began in the year 1983, From Chakravyuha playing a negative politician to supporting character in Suryavamsha and he has acted in more than 500 Kannada movies.
Mukhya Mantri Chandru initiated his career in Chakravyuha as a corrupt politician. He was introduced to the Kannada film industry by producer N. Veeraswamy.
Chandru got his Bachelor of Science degree from Siddaganga College, Tumkur and Bachelor of Laws degree from Government College, Bangalore. He hails from a Sadaru(Hindu) caste. Initially, he joined a drama troupe which finally led to roles in the Kannada films. He married Padma in June 1983 and has 2 sons, Bharath Chandru and Sharath Chandru. He has been awarded a Honorary Doctorate from Gulbarga University for his social, cultural and language concerns and services.
