Moses Witbooi

Moses Witbooi was born in Calvinia, Western Cape Province, South Africa in 1823. He was the second chief of the Nama tribe, a sub-tribe of the Khoikhoi. Born !Nuquicai ( his Namaqua name), and baptized in 1830 by a German Missionary Bishop Grys von Bobben. Moses Witbooi grew up as a tribal warrior of the Nama people under the guidance of his Grandfather Quaraseb who was a respected political figure during the Imfecane wars.

His son Hendrik Witbooi was also chief of the tribe.
