Moi University is a public university located in the town of Eldoret in western Kenya. It was the second public university to be established in Kenya, after the University of Nairobi. It is one of seven fully fledged public institutions of higher learning in Kenya (others being the University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Maseno University, Egerton University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and Kenyatta University). It was established in 1984 by the Moi University Act of Parliament after recommendations from the Mackay Commission.
As of 2007, it had over 20,000 students of whom 17,086 were undergraduates, and operates eight campuses and two constituent colleges. The chancellor of the university is Professor Miriam Were and the acting vice-chancellor is Professor Laban Ayiro
Moi University was first established in 1984, as the second university in Kenya. The first year, its only department consisted of a transfer of the Department of Forestry at University of Nairobi, and a total of 83 students. The university's school of medicine, opened in 1996, was the second one established in Kenya. The University shed off some of its campuses to become full-fledged universities, notably Garissa University College, which unfortunately made headlines after a terrorist attack. Still, Moi University has turned controversial in recent past, fighting closure of its schools and accreditation of courses. It's an expectation that it will return soon to its exponential growth days.
The university emphasizes science and technology. It has the following schools:
The university is served by the Margaret Thatcher Library.
Religious services are available Grace Chapel and St. Michael's Chapel.
For sport facilities, the main campus hosts a rugby pitch, a field hockey pitch, lawn tennis and volleyball courts, and a fitness centre.
