Mistborn: The Alloy of Law is the first novel in the high fantasy Wax and Wayne series written by American author Brandon Sanderson. It is a sequel to the original Mistborn trilogy (The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages). The setting of the novel is approximately 300 years after the conclusion of the original trilogy.
It was originally released as a standalone, transitional sequel on November 8, 2011 by Tor Books. It later became the first of four books in the Wax and Wayne series. It is followed by Shadows of Self (2015), The Bands of Mourning (2016), and a fourth book, The Lost Metal, scheduled for 2018.
The story includes two Twinborn, who are able to use some abilities that were not featured in the trilogy, and introduces the concept of Twinborns to the Mistborn mythos.
The work that eventually turned into Mistborn: The Alloy of Law was originally a creative writing exercise, not necessarily intended for publication, to help clear Sanderson's head before continuing work on A Memory of Light from The Wheel of Time and the next book in The Stormlight Archive. It turned out better than expected and was released for publication.
Alloy of Law is set approximately 300 years after the conclusion of the original trilogy. It also introduces the concept of Twinborn for the first time in the series.
The book opens with Waxillium and his partner Lessie, who are investigating a serial killer in a small city in the Roughs. They decide to split up and Wax follows the murderer's tracks, leading him into a small church, where he finds that Lessie had been captured and held as hostage by the serial killer. While trying to free her, something goes awry, and Wax accidentally kills Lessie.
