The song was received well by critic and blogs, hotnewhiphop.com described the song as "Mindful is built off of a funky guitar line, and the singer takes the opportunity to ride the groove with some impressive bars, injecting some serious attitude into her rhythmic verses".Singersroom reviewed the song "She recently took on Yo Gotti’s “Down In The DM,” then she was back to singing (a little more) on “Ain’t You,” now she’s back with another track from More Issues Than Vogue (MITV): the T-Pain-assisted shortie, Mindful."Vibe reviewed the song "K. Michelle and T-Pain recently put in a few studio sessions for the songstress’ forthcoming album, More Issues Than Vogue. Together on the track, “Mindful,” the pair backs each other up as they warn the naysayers to take a few steps back. And yep, we hear some more of K’s fiery raps on the collaboration".
On March 10, 2016 the music video premiered on K. Michelle's YouTube channel.
The music video features K. Michelle with a burst of colors in the visual, as K. Michelle has various multicolored hair and wears a fur coat. She's wears a hot pink jacket that is similar to the Grease‘s Pink Ladies’ Jacket. But instead of “Pink Ladies,” her jacket reads “Slay Michelle.”
Rap-Up.com described the video as "The colorful clip opens with the rainbow-haired singer playing cards with her girls outside her pink trailer home. They spot a neighboring group of girls, and just like that, it’s on. Before you know it, Slay Michelle is taking care of business, dancing in the streets, and warning anyone that tries to get in her way." Singersroom described the video as "The clip features an animated K. Michelle as she and her friends live in a lit trailer park. Also, you’ve probably never see Michelle perform this much choreography!."
