Midnight Sun is an upcoming American romantic drama film directed by Scott Speer and written by Eric Kirsten, based on the 2006 Japanese film of same name. The film stars Bella Thorne, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Rob Riggle. Principal photography began on October 12, 2015 in Vancouver.
Sheltered since early childhood, Katie Price (Bella Thorne), now 17, lives with a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. During the day she is housebound, having only her father, Jack (Rob Riggle) for company. But it is after dark that Katie’s world opens up, when she ventures out to the local train station to play her guitar for travelers. One night, she meets Charlie (Patrick Schwarzenegger), an ex-high school all-star athlete, whom she has secretly admired for years. She hides her condition from him and the two begin a romance.
On June 22, 2015, it was announced that Scott Speer would next direct a young adult romantic drama film Midnight Sun based on the script by Eric Kirsten, which would star Patrick Schwarzenegger as Charlie and Bella Thorne as Katie. Boies / Schiller Film Group would finance the film based on the 2006 Japanese film of same name. While the Japanese film is based on the 1993 Hong Kong film C'est la vie, mon chéri. John Rickard and Zack Schiller would produce the film. On October 9, 2015, Rob Riggle joined the film to play Katie's father Jack.
Principal photography on the film began on October 12, 2015 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver-based Alternative Rock band Hawking appears in the film, performing at a nightclub.
