Michael League is an American composer, producer, guitarist and bassist for the New York based jazz fusion band Snarky Puppy. He has won 2 Grammy awards for his work with the band. He also owns his own record label.
League was born in California to musically adept parents. He had an attraction to music from an early age, and began playing guitar at 13 years old. He started playing bass at age 17, when he was requested to do so in his senior high school jazz band. He knew little about the instrument but found himself increasingly fascinated with the instrument as time progressed. He went on to study jazz at the University of North Texas. He moved to Brooklyn, New York in 2009.
League formed Snarky Puppy in his freshman year of college at the University of North Texas, originally consisting of him and nine of his peers. He is also the composer for most of their original music, as well as the producer of all albums released by the band. Aside from being the leader for the band, he has also worked with people like Kirk Franklin and Walter Hawkins. He has also signed Magda Giannikou when she was an unknown artist. In 2013, Snarky Puppy's "Something" featuring Lalah Hathaway won the band the Grammy for Best R&B Performance of the year. When asked about it in an interview, he spoke of his surprise at the victory. "Surreal is the right word for it. The thing is, I was very certain that we were not going to win because every single band that performed at that ceremony won in their category. There was a band in our category, Hiatus Kaiyote, that actually performed. I was certain they were going to win and their track had Q-Tip on it and it was definitely an amazing track."
