Melvyn "Mel" Scott (26 September 1939 – 1997) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre half. Scott made nearly 300 career appearances in both England and the United States over an eleven-year period. He was also an England Under-23 international.
Born in Claygate, Scott was a product of Chelsea's Junior Scheme, turning professional in November 1956, having played for the Combination team a few days before that. He started the 1957–58 season in the Combination team, but was promoted to the League side in March 1958, playing 9 of the last 10 games. As captain of the Junior team, he guided them to the Final of the 1957–58 FA Youth Cup. In 1958–59, he made 34 League appearances followed by 9 in 1959–60. In the next 2 seasons, he was on National Service but played a further 9 League matches in 1960–61, and then 36 in the 1961–62 season. He did not play in the League team in the following season and was transferred to Brentford in March 1963, making 17 appearances in a side which included a number of former internationals and which won the Fourth Division Championship. All in all, he made 97 League appearances for Chelsea between 1957 and 1962, before becoming a first team regular at Brentford, for whom he made 157 appearances in the League between 1962 and 1967. Scott finished his professional career in the United States, spending two seasons with the Oakland Clippers of the North American Soccer League. He made 4 England Under-23 appearances against Poland, Czechoslovakia and France in 1958–59; and against Hungary in 1959–60. Sam Leitch saw him 'as favourite' for the centre half position for the World Cup in Chile in 1962.
Scott died in 1997.
