Mecosta Township is a civil township of Mecosta County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,435 at the 2000 census. The Village of Mecosta, which is also in Mecosta County, is in Morton Township, several miles to the east.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.9 square miles (93 km2), of which 33.9 square miles (88 km2) is land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) (5.57%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,435 people, 938 households, and 681 families residing in the township. The population density was 71.8 per square mile (27.7/km²). There were 1,184 housing units at an average density of 34.9 per square mile (13.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.92% White, 0.49% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.36% of the population.
There were 938 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 2.99.
