Matthew England


Matthew England is a physical oceanographer and climate scientist. England completed a B.Sc. (Honours Class I and University Medal) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Sydney, Australia. In 2005 he became a Professor at the University of New South Wales, and was awarded an Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship that same year. England was awarded an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship in 2011. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2014 and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2016.

England's work relates to the global-scale ocean circulation and its influence on regional climate, with a focus on climate processes in the Southern Hemisphere and around Antarctica. England established the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales with Professor Andrew Pitman in 2007. England is a former Fulbright Scholar and CSIRO Flagship Fellow. He currently co-chairs the CLIVAR Southern Ocean Regional Panel.

England was an organiser and signatory of the 2007 Bali Declaration by Climate Scientists. England was the convening lead author of the Copenhagen Diagnosis in 2009, chairing its release in Copenhagen at the UNFCCC COP15 meeting.
