The Democratic Primary was won by Mark Roosevelt, a State Representative and the great-grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He defeated State Senators George A. Bachrach and Michael J. Barrett.
Activist Bob Massie defeated State Representative Marc Draisen for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor.
Weld defeated Democrat Mark Roosevelt by a 71–28% margin, the largest Gubernatorial margin of victory in Massachusetts history.
