Martin Pence


Martin Pence (November 18, 1904 – May 29, 2000) was an American lawyer and judge. He served as judge on the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii.

Pence was born in 1904 in Sterling, Kansas. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. He assumed private practice, Hilo, Hawaii, 1936-1945 before becoming a Judge of the Third Circuit Court, Territory of Hawaii, 1945-1950. He returned to private practice, Hilo, Hawaii, 1950-1961.

Pence was nominated by John F. Kennedy on September 14, 1961, to a new seat created by 73 Stat. 4 to the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 21, 1961, and received his commission on September 22, 1961. He served as chief judge, 1961-1974. He assumed senior status on November 18, 1974 and his service terminated on January 31, 2000, due to retirement.
