Luis Carlos Vélez Marroquín (October 6, 1977 in Bogotá, Colombia) is a bilingual, multimedia, journalist and News Executive.
At Telemundo / NBCUni served as Executive Vice President of News at Telemundo Network and later as Anchor, Senior Correspondent.
He is also an Op/Ed writer for El Espectador and Caracol Radio's 6 AM panelist.
Previously, Luis Carlos was Anchor and News Director in Caracol TV Colombia. In that role he supervised all editorial content for Caracol News across its multimedia platforms and anchored Ultima Edición. Under his leadership Noticias Caracol became Colombia´s TV news leader reaching its highest ratings since its launch in 1998.
Before Caracol, Vélez was anchor / reporter for CNN International based in New York. Vélez joined CNN International from sister network CNN en Español where he was anchor and senior business producer.
He was part of special assignments for the CNN News Group. In 2010, he was sent to Haiti to cover the massive earthquake and to Colombia, where he accompanied the Colombian military forces in their operations against the terrorist group Farc. He also covered the September 2010 political crisis in Ecuador.
Vélez has interviewed many Latin American President in recent years, and the US President Barack Obama.
Vélez started his professional career in finance and he worked for Enron Corporation in Texas. In 2007, Vélez was named one of the 10 “Leaders of the Future” in Colombia.
Born in Bogotá, Vélez earned a degree in Economics from the Universidad de los Andes. He also earned undergraduate credits at the London School of Economics and a Certificate in Administration and Management from Harvard University in Massachusetts. Vélez speaks Spanish and English.
In 2015 Vélez received an Emmy for best Breaking News Coverage in Spanish TV as Executive Producer
