Lovely Anand was a member of the 10th Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India. As the debutant candidate for the new Bihar People's Party established by her husband, Anand Mohan Singh, she had defeated a heavyweight parliamentarian Kishori Sinha, the wife of former Bihar Chief Minister Satyendra Narayan Sinha, in a 1994 Lok Sabha by-election in the north Bihar constituency of Vaishali. She lost the seat in the 1999 elections.
Anand has also twice been elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Bihar, winning once in Barh and again in Navinagar. She was the youngest female Member of Parliament to represent India in the United Nation's Fourth International Conference On Women, held at Beijing, China in 1995.
Anand was beaten as an Indian National Congress candidate by Narendra Narayan Yadav of Janata Dal (United) in the Alamnagar constituency in the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections. Her husband, Anand Mohan Singh, whom she had married in 1991, is serving a life sentence for abetting murder and at this time she was vehement in denying that her husband was a criminal, saying that he was the victim of a political conspiracy that has consistently tried to tarnish the reputation that Singh built for himself.
