This is an alphabetical list of townships in the U.S. state of Michigan. For listings of townships by county, see Category:Townships in Michigan by county. There are 1,240 civil townships in Michigan's 83 counties. This list includes both general law townships as well as charter townships. Most of these townships (at least in the Lower Peninsula) are based on survey townships of 36 square miles (93 km2). In some less populated counties in Northern Michigan as well as in the Upper Peninsula, civil townships often comprise several survey townships (such areas are often expanses of National or State Forests).
Townships in Michigan are considered by the United States Census Bureau to be a minor civil division. Townships, along with incorporated cities, constitute subdivisions of counties in Census Bureau terminology. Incorporated villages in Michigan are considered to be a part of the township or townships containing the village.
