List of historic monuments of 1840

In 1840, the French Commission for Historical Monuments (Commission des monuments historiques) published its first list designating French historic monuments, containing 934 entries. The list focused primarily on those requiring conservation works, and consisted mostly of public monuments belonging to the state, a commune, or département. Monuments were nominated by the prefects of the departments.
