The all-time leader in senior caps for either gender, Kristine Lilly of the United States, had 354 caps and retired from football on January 6, 2011. Eighteen other women — eleven of them American, two from China and one each from Germany, Sweden, Canada, Denmark and Japan — have 200 or more caps. No man has obtained 200 caps. The current active leaders in caps are Christie Rampone of the United States, among women, with 311; and Iker Casillas of Spain and Gianluigi Buffon of Italy, among men, with 167.
As of 10 July 2016, a total of 355 male footballers have played 100 or more "A" international matches for their respective nation(s), according to FIFA's official documents.Ahmed Hassan, Egypt international, currently holds the men's all-time record with 184 caps. The first footballer to win 100 international caps was Billy Wright of Wolverhampton Wanderers and England in 1959. Wright went on to appear 105 times for England, 90 of them as captain.
