The following is a list of characters who first appear in the fifth series of the BBC school drama Waterloo Road, in order of first appearance. The fifth series consists of twenty episodes, first broadcast from 25 October 2009 to 15 July 2010. The series sees Waterloo Road merge with a local private school, and all new characters in the series' first episode arrive as a result of this merger. They include new main cast members in the form of executive head Max Tyler, deputy head Christopher Mead, head of food technology Ruby Fry, head of modern foreign languages Jo Lipsett and English teacher Helen Hopewell. New pupil characters include Lindsay James, her sister Emily, Ros McCain, Amy Porter, Siobhan Mailey, Luke Pendle and Tom Clarkson's son Josh Stevenson. Ruby's husband John makes his first appearance in episode five, as does pupil Vicky MacDonald, who returns to the cast in a regular capacity in series six. Pupil Finn Sharkey joins the school in episode eleven, and healthy schools co-ordinator Adam Fleet appears from episode thirteen to the end of the series.

Max Tyler is the main antagonist of the first half of series five.
