Washington was admitted to the Union on November 11, 1889, and elects its United States Senators to Class 1 and Class 3. Its current senators are Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.
Class 1
Class 1 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle that has recently been contested in 1994, 2000, 2006, and 2012. The next election will be in 2018.
Class 3
Class 3 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle that has recently been contested in 1998, 2004, and 2010, and 2016. The next election will be in 2022.
As of October 2016[update], there are two living former Senators, both from Class 1 (although Gorton had also served in Class 3). The most recent senator to die was Brock Adams of Class 3 (1987-1993) on September 10, 2004. The most recent Class 1 senator to die was Hugh Mitchell (1945-1946) on June 10, 1996. The most recently serving Class 1 senator to die was Henry M. Jackson (1953-1983), who died in office on September 1, 1983.
