New Mexico was admitted to the Union on January 6, 1912, and elects senators in Class 1 and Class 2. Its current Senators are Democrats Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich.
Class 1
Class 1 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle that has recently been contested in 1994, 2000, 2006, and 2012. The next election will be in 2018.
Class 2
Class 2 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle that has recently been contested in 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2014. The next election will be in 2020.
As of October 2016[update], there are three former Senators who are currently living, two from Class 1 and one from Class 2. The most recent senator to die was Edwin L. Mechem of Class 1 (1962-1964) on November 27, 2002. The most recent Class 2 senator to die was Clinton Presba Anderson (1949-1973) on November 11, 1975. The most recently serving Class 1 senator to die was Joseph Montoya (1964-1977) on June 8, 1978.
