As of October 2016[update], there are three former U.S. Senators from Michigan who are currently living, two from Class 1 and one from Class 2. The most recent senator to die was Robert P. Griffin of Class 2 (1966-1979) on April 17, 2015. The most recent Class 1 senator to die was Charles E. Potter (1952-1959) on November 23, 1979. The most recently serving Class 1 senator to die was Philip Hart (1959-1976), who died in office on December 26, 1976.
