The first season of The X Factor Philippines aired on ABS-CBN, starting on June 23, 2012 and ending October 7, 2012 but there were special episodes a week after the finale; the live shows began on August 4, 2012. 12 acts made it into the live shows. KZ Tandingan was crowned the winner of the season, with Gabriel Maturan becoming the runner-up and Daddy's Home finishing in third.
The Boys category is mentored by Martin Nievera. Contestants from this category were males from ages 16 to 25. There were five candidates namely: Gabriel Maturan, Anton Paolo Antenorcruz, Kedebon Colim, Jeric Medina, and Michael Pangilinan. Nievera chose the following:
Kedebon Colim is an 18-year-old student from Cebu. Colim auditioned with One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" and had entertained the judges and most of the live audience with his jolly movements and antics, thus receiving four yeses from the judges. During the Bootcamp stage, he sang "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy. He sang "Superhero" by Rocksteddy during the Judges' home visit. His appearance on the live shows have generated interest and criticism from many people on several social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook regarding his singing abilities. On week 7, he landed on the bottom 2 for the first time along with Daddy's Home by the public vote. Colim was eliminated after Valenciano, Corrales and his own mentor, Nievera, decided to eliminate him over Daddy's Home. He was eliminated from the competition on September 16, 2012 and came in 6th place overall in the competition.
Gabriel Anciano Maturan is a 19-year-old student from Dapitan. He grew up from three different men, whom he considered his fathers. He lived in Denmark for three years after her mother's marriage with his Danish stepfather ended. He is now living with his newest stepfather in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. Maturan auditioned with Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours". During the Bootcamp stage, he sang "On and On" by Stephen Bishop. He sang "Everything You Do" by Christian Bautista during the Judges' home visit. He is the only act never to land in the bottom 2. He was Nievera's last remaining act after Kedebon Colim and Jeric Medina were eliminated consecutively on weeks 7 and 8. On the top 4 show, he performed Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend". Public voting afterward launched him into the top 3 along with KZ Tandingan and Daddy's Home. On the top 3 show, he performed Fantasia Barrino's "I Believe", The Script's "The Man Who Can't Be Moved", and Roger Bart's "Go the Distance" with his mentor Martin Nievera. He lost to KZ Tandingan and became runner-up of the competition on October 7, 2012. After the show, he signed with Star Records.
