Prisoner (Internationally known as Prisoner: Cell Block H in the United States and United Kingdom) is an Australian soap opera created by Reg Watson. It was produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation and premiered on Network Ten on 26 February 1979 in Sydney and 27 February 1979 in Melbourne. After 8 seasons and 692 episodes, the series concluded on 11 December 1986.
The series first premiered in the United Kingdom on the ITV in 1984. However, not all regions of ITV screened the series at this point. Yorkshire was the first area of the UK to broadcast the series. Between 1985 and 1989 several other regions of ITV began to broadcast Prisoner. UTV in Northern Ireland was the final region of ITV to broadcast the series. In the Yorkshire region, the first season was broadcast between 8 October 1984 and 9 March 1987.
On 1 April 1997, Prisoner commenced broadcast on Channel 5 and a complete run of the series was shown. The final episode was screened on Channel 5 in 2001.
