In professional American football, the NFL gives the head coach credit for his team's win–loss record. As of the 2015 season, only 95 coaches, about 20%, have won 50 or more games.
At the time of the 1970 NFL–AFL merger, George Halas, head coach, founder and owner of the Chicago Bears, held the record for most regular-season wins as a head coach. He retired from coaching after the 1967 season with 318 wins. Twenty-eight years later, Halas was surpassed by Don Shula. Shula retired at the end of the 1995 season, after amassing 328 regular season wins.
This sortable table shows the top NFL coaches in order of regular season wins. The table also shows every team for which he was a head coach. If two coaches have the same number of wins, the coach with the higher winning percentage is ranked first.
