The following is a list of NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences holding championship games. The Big 12 Conference and the Sun Belt Conference are the only FBS conferences that do not currently hold a championship game due to the lack of teams within the conferences playing football (minimum 12 teams before the 2016 season). The Big 12 previously held a championship game from 1996 to 2010; following a change in NCAA rules, it will reinstate a championship game in 2017. Coastal Carolina joined the Sun Belt on July 1, 2016 but its football team will not begin Sun Belt play until the 2017 season and will not be eligible for bowl games until 2018. Due to the aforementioned change in NCAA rules, the Sun Belt became immediately eligible to hold a championship game, even though it has only 11 football members in 2016 and will have only 10 football members in 2018 after the expulsion of Idaho and New Mexico State. The conference announced that it would begin playing a championship game in 2018, though it did not immediately announce how it would determine the participants.
