The office of Mayor of Baton Rouge was formally created in 1850 as the chief executive of the City of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which has been the state capital of Louisiana continuously since 1849.
In 1947, the government of the city and the Parish of East Baton Rouge were consolidated and in 1982 they were merged into a single governing body. At that time, the title of the Mayor changed to "Mayor-President."
