Institute of National Importance (INI) is a status that may be conferred to a premier public higher education institution in India by an act of parliament, an institution which "serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state". INIs receive special recognition and funding. As of 23 April 2015[update] the Ministry of Human Resource Development has listed 92 institutions under this category. All Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, School of Planning and Architecture, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research and All India Institute of Medical Sciences are considered Institutes of National Importance.
